10 Ways to Boost Literacy At Home (Put Some Fun Back Into Literacy!)

Ahhh, Reading.  Writing.  They're always met with jumps of joy, right?  Tears of happiness? Woohoo, they say!  Give me that paper and pencil so I can just write and write and write and then edit it and read it over and over again!  Yay!
 
Who wants to play a video game when you could read a levelled reading book!?
 
Or watch a movie when you could write a journal response?!
 
Yeah.  
 
No.  
 
I thought not. 
 
You're not alone.  Don't worry.  Unless you honestly can answer yes to those questions -  your child loves to write and read - congratulations!  You've beaten the odds!  
 
Because odds are, you didn't answer yes to those questions.  You're right there with me - my child despises reading and writing.  They can do it, you say, if they tried, but they don't try.  They put in minimal effort and are constantly negotiating a way out of doing it.  Or worse, they've given up completely and now find it frustrating, challenging, and, sadly, it brings out the tears.  
 
Well, in our experience as teachers who work with children who struggle to enjoy reading and writing, it's actually quite simple.  Of course there could be something going on that is getting in the way of reading with fluency or comprehension, but even that can be quite simple, too.  Honestly, we believe we, as in teachers and parents, have successfully, over time, completely sucked the fun out of reading and writing.  Now, all that our youngsters experience is a boring, time consuming, uncreative, and, sometimes, obsolete task that has yet to have a real connection/purpose with their real life.  
 
Keep in mind - kids growing up today are learning and communicating  in a far different world than we ever could have imagined when we were youngsters.  You often don't learn things by reading a book.  You learn things by googling it.  You send a friend a text without even having to speak out loud or write in full sentences, let alone full words.  You enjoy detailed, imaginative stories and can even engage in them, all through the television screen, or a computer, or even a phone.  Simply put, literacy, as in reading and writing, seems to have lost its place as a pastime or even as an important communicative skill in the daily life of our youngsters.  The way in which knowledge is attained today is drastically different, and continuously changing.  This means we need to look at how, and why, we are teaching it as a skill in school and where, if any, is the creative process that once made it enjoyable and engaging?.  
 
When reading and writing are experienced just for pure reading and writing's sake, some of the benefits, just to name a few, are:
  • greater confidence and awareness
  • increased vocabulary
  • deeper understanding and ability to apply text conventions
  • increased memory
  • deeper sense of perspective and empathy
  • increased attention to fine details
  • fuller expression
  • deeper imagination
  • logical reasoning and critical thinking skills
  • stronger creative and innovative thinking
  • and a broader knowledge of the world and the people/things within it
 
So, this brings us to our main point.  Perhaps, we can adjust our way of teaching and learning of reading and writing, so that we can offer our children growing up today the gifts literacy has to offer without turning it into a chore.  Together, let's put the fun back into literacy and instil them with the confidence that they, too, have wonderful ideas to share. .  
 
Here's Our 10 Ways to Boost Literacy at Home  
 
1. Lighten Up On the Rules
Just let them enjoy a book, pictures and all.  Or write, just for the sake of writing whatever they want to write.  Even if it makes no sense to you.  Smile and appreciate the creative, or even 30 second effort, they put into.  Treat it as you would an artistic ability as much as you treat it as a necessary skill.  Writing and reading are very much a creative process that requires personal investment.  The better it is/becomes, usually depends on how invested the writer/reader is on their own.  Therefore, a child needs to feel empowered that they have the ability to do it.  When someone responds to a child's drawing, for instance, people usually are positive no matter what it looks like.  Then, after time, children invest their own time into wanting their pictures to look better.  Reading and writing, as anything, fit in this area of learning as well.  If we focus too much on the rules, then a child never sees it as a creative process and assumes there is simply a right and wrong way to do it, which in turn makes one believe they're either good or bad at it.  Don't worry about using a finger to follow along in the book or not. Don't worry about sounding out every single word out perfectly.  Don't worry about trying to learn and apply everything, every time.  Don't worry, period.  Just enjoy the experience of simply reading a book or writing out an idea. And congratulate them on their effort. In time, the effort will increase as the positive support continues. 
 
2. Read, just for Reading's Sake
Just read.  No assignments, book reports, records of minutes reading.  Just read.  And then when you feel like you're done, put it away.  And then when you think of it again, read again.  You know, just like you would with anything you'd like to make a hobby or interest.  
 
3. Write, for just Writing's Sake
Just write. For yourself.  For enjoyment.  For stress relief.  For deeper understanding.  For to do lists.  Just write and don't judge the writing with a measure of being good or bad.  It's a creative process, open-ended and personal.  Get rid of the rule book and just write. It doesn't always have to be on display or for someone else's eyes.  It's just for you.  
 
4. Low-Stress Environment
There's a time and a place to learn the conventions of writing and reading.  Overtime is not one of them.  Make time to create a low-stress environment to enable a fondness to emerge.  Comfy chairs, blankets, a snack and a good book.  On a rainy day. Or an open journal and pen right before bed, in a quiet dimly lit home.  Take the stressors away and just enjoy literacy for what it can do for ourselves.  Take the pressure off of doing it 'right' and making it perfect.  Don't edit.  Don't worry.  If the focus is to constantly improve and do better each time, the thrill or enjoyment ever felt before will be quickly lost.  Get back to the creative process that it is.  Let it go.  
 
5. Role Model
Children learn most from watching and learning from the adults in their life.  If you want your little one to pick up reading and writing, do so yourself.  And make sure they see you doing it.  Don't talk about it, just do it.  No fuss.  Be the role model for your children to help them grow into individuals you admire and are proud of.  
 
6. Make it Readily Available
Have books around the house.  On display.  Easy to see and pick up.  Leave them in plain sight, switch them up and put new ones around.  Enrich the environment in literacy.  Books of different kinds.  Magazines, Newspapers, Picture Books, Graphic Novels, the works.  The more they are around, the more likely they might be picked up and looked at, without any prompting to do so.  
 
7. Read more than just books
Reading doesn't just happen in books.  It's on social media, newspapers, recipes, subtitles, menus, and roadsigns.  It's everywhere.  Take notice that one doesn't have to read a book cover to cover to be a reader. 
 
8. Visit the Library.  Use the Library
The library is this magical place which houses millions of books, of all shapes and sizes. Among movies, learning resources, quiet sitting areas, and much more  All Free.  They also have programs, FREE PROGRAMS, for families, for teens, for children, for adults - all focused on getting you focused on enjoying the world of literacy.  Imagine!  Free to use and sign up, too.  Amazing.  
 
9. Talk about what you read and write
Do you read?  Maybe not books as often as you'd like, but you still read.  Talk about it.  Maybe not even to your children, but do so around your children.  They're listening.  Talk about an article you read.  A post you wrote.  A recipe you saved.  A comment thread you followed.  Anything.  It's all exposing the enjoyment you get out of reading and writing, and how you apply it to your life.  Help create those real life connections for them, realizing that the literacy that once was has changed and adapted with the times.  Be open to it and embrace it. 
 
10. Read to them - A lot
Everyone loves being read to.  It's calming and sparks the creative imaginations inside all of us just waiting to get active again.  It doesn't matter the age.  Read to them.  They will love it.  Comment on the pictures.  Interact and have fun with the characters.  Practise your reading aloud skills.  Show an interest and talk about the reading.  They will love the time spent sharing this experience with you.  What they learn from the experience will be beyond what you could ever imagine.

Reduce Bullying & Improve Academics with Multigrade Classes in a Small School

We have taught in multigrade and single grade classrooms, large and small schools, traditional and non-traditional school settings - you name it, we've seen it.  Out of all them, we believe that there truly can be a winning combination - one that can benefit the students, families, and teachers involved.  A combination that enables a positive learning environment, a strong interaction between teachers, learners, and learning, and a stable connection between home, school and the real world.  Multigrade & Small School.  It's the golden combination, in our opinion.  It sounds a little old school, doesn't it?  Going back to our roots?  But honestly, it has value.  Plenty of it.  Let us show you just a taste of why we choose to remain multigrade and small school:

Before we get going, though, let's make sure we're on the same page.  Multigrade, to us, simply means a classroom that has more than one grade in the room, working independently or together, with each student working towards their individual curriculum goals for their grade level.  Essentially, they are learning simultaneously, both together and apart.  It sounds trickier than it really is. Remember - SMALL SCHOOL!    

9 Benefits of Multigrade Classrooms in a Small School:

  • Cooperative rather than Competitive: Academic, physical and social competition between peers is reduced, as is the anxiety and pre-occupation of having to compete and compare one's self to their peers. Consequently, discipline measures are needed less frequently and individual differences become celebrated. The learning and social atmosphere is cooperative rather than competitive.  
  • Team Player & Leader Wrapped Into One: Students receive more intentional and unintentional training to be independent workers, leaders, and work as a team. Off-task behaviors diminish as self-discipline and accountability increases.
  • Celebrated Individuality: Multigrade classrooms are less homogenous than single-grade classrooms, therefore differences are the norm and more easily accepted, celebrated even.  With diversity as the norm, bullying has very little to stand on. Children naturally learn to support each other, no matter their age or grade level, and recognize each other as individuals. 
  • Enabled Multiple Learning Styles: The more variety of grades, personalities, interests, the more easily accepted it is that each student learns in different ways and at different times. Children who are academically advanced or lagging in any particular subject area can easily take part in higher or lower level skills, showcasing their strengths and working on their challenges, all the while maintaining interactions with their peers in a positive and supportive way.  
  • Re-Teaching & Pre-Teaching: Students are continuously exposed  to re-teaching, as they listen in on, and benefit from, lessons being given to younger students.  This review of the basics reinforces and clarifies a child’s understanding, even when they may be working at a more advanced level.  Students are also exposed to pre-teaching (“eaves-dropping” on teacher’s lessons and discussions with older students).  This both prepares and stimulates the younger child’s thinking.
  • Role Modelling & Mentorship: Pro-social behaviors and expectations are modelled by older students.  The teacher plays a key role in modelling and intentionally teaching these skills, but in a multigrade classroom, many models are available for younger students.  Older students have opportunities to genuinely help younger students learn.  Their teaching helps them clarify their own learning.  The cognitive development and self-esteem of both younger and older students are improved.  
  • Strong Relationships: Lengthier time together (because of small class and/or multiple years with the same teacher and peers) can increase trust, understanding of expectations, respect for individuality, and positive relationships between teachers, students, peers, and even parents.  Teachers build upon their knowledge of each child’s interests, strengths and needs over the multiple years they teach a child.  The stability of having the same teacher for a number of years can increase a student's emotional security and trust in adults. Students feel a strong bond, and work to maintain the connection. 
  • Increased Learning Time: Effective learning time in the first term increases when children return to the same teacher in September.  Students and Teachers can pick up where they left off rather than starting fresh with new routines and expectations. 
  • Family Connection: Less students means more time put into each child's education, which includes getting to know and working with each family closely.  Parents and teachers support each other in their goals for the child and respect each other's perspective.  The child's best interests are always at the heart of it all.

10 Reasons Why Children Succeed in Small Classes

It seems like class size is always in the news, It's becoming quite the sticky subject.  And rightly so.  In our experience as teachers who have worked with both small and large classes, we've found that as class sizes grow, not only does your child's mittens go missing, but so does a piece of their independence and sense of belonging.  The more students in each class, the more the teacher can't connect with each family to offer feedback and support.  This is why we believe small class sizes are at the upmost importance to maintain.  Your child needs to be given the opportunity to shine.  

In our experience, here's 10 reasons why children succeed in small classes:
STUDENTS ARE RECOGNIZED
In a smaller class, it’s more difficult for students to hide and get left behind.  It's easier for teachers to recognize student behaviour, moods, and effort.  Fewer students means that everyone gets attention from the teacher, especially when they need it most, and they are supported each and every day.  

LEARNING IS ENHANCED
Not only can students learn more in small classes, as there is more time to dig deeper into subjects, but they can also learn faster. The class progresses through the curriculum more quickly as it is easier to assess who is learning and to what level.  This means there is more time for hands-on learning experiences and enrichment activities. Learning is enhanced by the confidence students develop to share their opinions and ask and answer questions, which also benefits their peers.  

CONFIDENCE IS BUILT
In a smaller class, students are less intimidated and feel less risk to come out of their shell and participate.  They are recognized for who they are, valued as a core member of a group, and are able to express their opinions, take part, and try new things.  They build confidence as a valued individual and learn to respect themselves and others for what each individual brings to the group. 


TEACHERS CAN TEACH
Teachers can move around the room more freely, interact with students in a smaller space,, do more activities together as a group or individually, have more flexibility to use different instructional approaches, and have more time to explore additional material.  Modelling, discussing, and experiencing become a regular part of every lesson, deepening the engagement of each student.  Teachers have more opportunities to observe and assess the class as a whole and the students as individuals. 

CLASSES BECOME A COMMUNITY
With fewer students per class, individuals can connect more closely with their peers and become more confident and comfortable when it comes to sharing their ideas and perspectives. These connections lead to lasting friendships and an understanding of how to work with well with others.  Students naturally learn to respect and connect with peers, no matter their differences, as they are recognized for their character and contribution to the group.  Differences are celebrated and working together is a natural way of learning.  

INCREASED PARTICIPATION
Small groups mean fewer voices, which means that the students those voices belong to have more chances to speak up in class. They can apply the knowledge they’ve acquired as they participate in discussions and express their opinions.

FOCUS ON LEARNING
In learning environments with a limited number of students, teachers can spend more time teaching the material and less time getting the attention of those who get distracted. Teachers can also cater to students’ different learning styles and ensure that they stay engaged and understand what is being taught.  With fewer students, comes fewer distractions and fewer discipline problems which means more focus on enjoying learning.

MORE FEEDBACK
Teachers have more time to individualize their feedback, ensuring that each student understands the material and parents are well-informed.  Teachers can ensure each student gets the help he or she needs and is reaching his or her potential.  Families are involved and students feel more connected to their school and learning. 

MORE OPPORTUNITY FOR ONE-ON-ONE
Students and teachers often work together one-on-one, which gives teachers the opportunity to customize instruction and guidance, and students receive their instructors’ and mentors’ undivided attention.

IDEAS ARE SHARED
With fewer students in a class, there is more time for each student to share their own ideas, express their opinions and describe their perspectives.  Students can gain from each other and enrich their learning by connecting to it and their peers.  This allows students to make meaning of their learning, which can later be applied to deeper concepts and carried with them throughout their lives.
