Language and Math are taught both interconnected with other subjects, and on their own, to develop and strengthen personal strategies and skills.
Math is focused on real-life application and to build problem solving abilities, while also building strong critical thinking and comprehension skills. This enables purpose and meaning to help motivate math learning and builds manageable strategies to solve math problems with ease and success. Math assignments vary from skill practice and development, group work, individual work, one-on-one coaching, hands-on manipulative work, using online resources, as well as preparing and taking quizzes and tests as they progress into higher grades.
Reading, writing, speaking and listening are respected both as an art and as a form of communication; therefore both creative and conventional styles are taught, explored, and encouraged, at every grade. Assignments vary by age, interest, and ability, but can include spelling, cursive, grammar, whole language and phonics approach, invented spelling, poetry, free writing, etymology, public speaking, discussion, debates, spoken word, theatre, essays, research projects, book clubs, as well as preparing and taking quizzes and tests as they progress into higher grades. Theme is a combination of Science and Social Studies with applications of Language, Math, Health, Art, Music, etc. It focuses on practicing and applying real-life studies of questioning, researching, thinking critically, listening, refining, sharing, presenting, discussing, and preparing. A wide range of topics spanning how and why the world works, and everything in between, is explored through interactive and hands-on projects and assignments that work to build upon one another. With every activity, new experiences are gained that are applied throughout the year, adding value and meaning to the topics and skills gained. Questions are encouraged, refined, challenged, critiqued, and broadened. Students explore skills in research and presentation, note taking and studying, listening and speaking, etc. They also explore personal skills in perseverance, grit, integrity, accountability, teamwork, and leadership. They have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for their learning and for their peers, as they work independently and collaboratively, to discover new ideas together.
